Current Students & Graduates

Are you a Music Graduate or currently studying?

There is much more to building a successful career in music than what is covered during your time at college or conservatoire.

Whether your goal is to perform professionally, build a freelance portfolio career, secure orchestral work, teach, or create your own musical projects, the path can often feel unclear.

I can help you explore the possibilities available, understand the realities of the profession, and identify practical steps towards your goals. Together, we can discuss your experiences so far, your ambitions for the future, and develop a realistic plan to help you move forward with confidence.

Preparing for Life After Graduation

Graduating from music college is an exciting milestone, but it also marks the beginning of a new chapter. Alongside continuing to develop as a musician, there are many practical aspects of professional life that students need to be prepared for.

For many musicians, this means learning how to earn an income from a variety of sources, whether through performing, teaching, freelance work, or personal projects. It may involve understanding self-employment, keeping accurate financial records, and becoming familiar with tax responsibilities such as filing annual returns with HMRC.

Professionalism also becomes increasingly important. Being responsive to emails and messages, maintaining a good reputation, and being available when opportunities arise can often make a significant difference in building a successful career.

At the same time, musical development should not stop after graduation. Many musicians continue to challenge themselves by organising concerts, creating ensembles, applying for funding opportunities, commissioning new work, or developing personal artistic projects. Taking ownership of your own opportunities is often an important part of building a sustainable career.

There are also practical considerations, such as obtaining a DBS check for teaching and education work, preparing professional materials, building a network of contacts, and understanding how the industry operates.

While this may seem like a lot to think about, these skills are not obstacles—they are part of becoming a well-rounded and resilient professional. The musicians who thrive are often those who combine strong musical ability with organisation, adaptability, and a willingness to create opportunities for themselves.

A career in music can take many forms, and no two journeys look exactly the same. With the right preparation, knowledge, and mindset, you can develop the confidence and practical skills needed to navigate the opportunities ahead.
